In December last year, IRCTC had decided to rope in SHGs, in making regional cuisine available to the traveling passengers; but even as three months have passed, not a single SHG from the state has tied-up with IRCTC to provide the region’s food in trains.

The pilot project was launched in December 3 last year in Maharashtra.

Officials in IRCTC said, “Currently, nine SHGs in the country are working with the department from different regions.”

“We kept the option open for all SHGs to work with us in providing local food to people in the train,” said Sandip Dutta, public relation officer IRCTC.

Sandip further added that e-catering project is an ongoing process and SHGs from any region can approach them to working under the said project.

E-catering project was launched by IRCTC to facilitate passengers in booking meals of their choice.

He informed that SHG prepares food and delivers the preordered meals to the passengers on stationary stations opted at a particular station. SHGs provide meals through their catering units that are included in the e-catering project and are provided license as required under central/state laws.
