Punjab to get more funds under central schemes, says Birender

Union rural development minister Chaudhary Birender Singh on Tuesday assured that his ministry would soon release of Rs 77.15 crore under MNREGA (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act) for the previous year, besides for the current financial year by October.

He also agreed to consider Punjab’s request to sanction 2,000km more roads under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) in the state.

The Union minister, who met deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal here, said the proposal sent by the state government for the rejuvenation and rehabilitation of 1,505 ponds in villages with population more than 5,000 was under consideration and the ministry would soon decide regarding release Rs 20 lakh grant per pond.

Discussing the progress of ongoing road projects under the PMGSY, Sukhbir informed Birender that 4,950km roads had already been completed at a cost of Rs 1,635 Crore under the PMGSY-1 and the work on 1347km roads was in progress under the PMGSY-II costing Rs 876 crore.
