The public works department (PWD) has started the survey of the proposed four-laning of Ropar-Balachaur Nawanshahr-Phagwara Road, which is expected to smoothen traffic flow from Mohali to Jalandhar.
The PWD would submit its survey report of the 83-km road to the Punjab Infrastructure Development Board (PIDB) within four months, said assistant engineer (PWD) Rajender Singh.
In 2009, the Punjab government had decided to connect Jalandhar with Mohali via the Machhiwara-Phagwara Express Highway, but this project was shelved after farmers, whose land was to be acquired for this highway, protested.
The government then decided to develop the existing Ropar-Balachaur-Nawanshahr-Phagwara Road into an express highway.
While the survey is at an initial stage, the department has proposed to develop four elevated roads in several places of the district, including Langroya village, Nawanshahr town, Banga and Garhi Bypass Road.
The road would make commuting from the Doaba region to Shaheed Bhagat Singh International Airport in Mohali easier.
The four-laned road will include the 3-km elevated road in Nawanshahr city, 1-km stretch in Langoya village, 3-km road in Banga town and 2.75-km of the Garhi Bypass in Balachaur town.
Sources in the PWD said the government had ordered officials to submit the survey report as soon as possible so that work on the road could begin.

{{/usCountry}}They said deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, who is schedule to visit Nawanshahr on October 5, would discuss the project with officials concerned.
