Stray dog menace has been a troubling issue for the city residents for some time now. There is not even a day where a dog bite case is not addressed in Jalandhar civil hospital.
In the month of June, 80 patients age below 14 years while 263 patients above age 14 were immunized with anti-rabies vaccination in Jalandhar city hospital. The data of July month is yet to be compiled by the civil surgeon office.
In-charge of anti-rabies clinic in civil hospital Dr. Devinder Singh said, "One an average, we receive 15-20 dog bite cases every day. On monthly basis, around 700-800 anti-rabies vaccination are being used for the dog bite cases."
The above data is only of the cases that were reported in Jalandhar civil hospital while there is no record for the cases that are not addressed in the hospital.
"Free vaccination is administered in the civil hospital with just Rs 10 token charge, the private hospitals in the same place will charge around Rs 350", Dr Singh further said.
The issue of stray dog menace and the measures to control it, is moving in and out from the general house meeting of the corporation from the last 20 years.
Meanwhile, Mayor Sunil Jyoti said, "We will take the decision on the proposal in our next F & CC (finance and control committee) meeting."
Stray Dog and Human Welfare Society, a registered society that will work for curtailing stray dog populations in the city, is still on the papers and has been waiting for granting land approval by the corporation.
Former Akali councillor Kuldeep Singh Oberoi who is also the President of the society said, " government has already given us approval for setting up this project and now, all we are asking is land by the corporation and we are going to pay for the whole project at our personal level."
In the general house meeting of November 4, 2014, Birring village was earmarked for the construction of dog pound . But the allotment of Birring village was slashed and two and half kanal land area will be allotted in Nangalsham area in Hoshiapur road.
"Municipal commissioner has given me assurance that land for the project will be approved by next week", he further said.
