Heavy rainfall over the past 24 hours has caused extensive damage to property in various areas of state. Increased silt deposits in river basins have affected two hydropower plants - the 1,500 MW Nathpa Jhakri hydel station, the country's largest, and the 412 MW Rampur plant, both of which have stopped generating power.
The meteorological centre has issued a warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall in all areas of the state over the next week. Met director Manmohan Singh said rainfall has been deficient by 18% in all districts except Kangra, Kullu and Una during this monsoon season.
The state government has issued instructions to all deputy commissioners to issue advisories and alerts from time to time to residents as well as tourists in their districts, asking them not to venture near rivers. They have also been told to keep disaster mitigation systems ready besides submitting reports on damage to property from time to time. The public works department has put all its officials on alert to ensure smooth flow of vehicular traffic in landslide hit areas.
From July 1 to 10, 317 mm of rainfall was recorded in Kangra district against the normal of 282 mm, with the figures for Kullu being 153 mm (127mm) and for Una 251 mm (176 mm). Across the state 143.9 mm of rain was recorded against the normal of 176 mm.
