Incidentally, Kshitij is the only one from Punjab on PMT top 50 list of rankers. The 18-year-old boy was confident of cracking the competitive exam, but never thought he would be among the top three rankers.

"This is beyond my expectation," he said. The phone has not stopped ringing at his house ever since the results were declared as congratulatory calls and messages continued to pour in.

Kshitij aspires to be a cardiologist. In order to prepare for the exam, he used to miss classes at his school in Rajpura to attend coaching in Chandigarh. "Besides attending coaching classes, I used to study six to seven hours daily and tried to devote equal time to all the subjects."

Kshitij is not content with topping the PMT. "My dream is to get admission in All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi," he said. "I am anxiously waiting for the results of the entrance exam and hope to crack it."

"Kshitij was very dedicated and keen to achieve his goal," principal Gayatri Kaushal said. "We expected a lot from him."

Kaushal credited Kshitij's hard work for his success. "He has not only made Rajpura proud, but also the whole of Punjab," she said.

Besides Kshitij, another boy from Rajpura, Tarwinder Singh, has got the second rank in the Scheduled Caste category.

Malerkotla's Haroon Singh is 90th on the list of rankers while Anshul Aggarwal from Patiala secured 160th rank.
