“It is an irony that Punjab suffers because of both draughts and floods at the same time,” he remarked, asking why the Punjab government could not think of measures to harvest the extra water and utilise it in the water-starved parts of the state. He expressed surprise that rain, as low as 100 mm, was enough to inundate and cause havoc in almost the entire state. Gurjeet said the damage was because the government lacked the foresight to take preventive measures.

In a strong statement issued here on Saturday, Rana asked why it was that every year, there were floods in the state and unimaginable damage to crops, property and life. “Every year this happens and the government washes its hands off with the ritual ‘girdawri’ orders and that is the end of it,” he pointed out, while suggesting that it should have drawn a long term comprehensive action plan to tackle the problem of floods.
