Rape at stadium: coach and cop booked one year later

A sports coach and an ASI have been booked for allegedly raping a girl from Ghawaddi village nearly a year ago. The police have registered a case after one year of receiving the complaint, following the orders of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, Chandigarh.

The police have registered a case after one year of receiving the complaint, following the orders of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, Chandigarh. However, no arrests have been made so far, as the accused are at large.

The accused have been identified as Prem Singh, who was deputed as a sports coach in the Railways, and ASI Balwinder Singh, who was earlier deputed in the Sadar police station.

The police commissioner had suspended the ASI around 20 days ago, as the vigilance bureau has arrested him under graft charges.

The accused allegedly hatched a conspiracy and deceived a girl on the pretext of getting her a job in the Railways and outraged her modesty.

The girl had come in contact with Prem Singh nearly a year ago. Prem Singh had lured her on the ground of getting a good job in the railways. On June 14, 2011, he allegedly called her to a room at Guru Nanak Stadium. ASI Balwinder Singh was already present there.

Later, she approached the Punjab and Haryana high court and submitted a petition before the court. The high court ordered the police commissioner to take action against the culprits.

After availing the advice of the district attorney (legal), the police commissioner ordered the police division no 8 to register a case against the accused.

Inspector Navreet Singh, SHO of police station division no 8, said the accused were at large and the police have launched a manhunt to arrest them.
