Reckless truck driver mows down teacher, injures sister

A truck that was reportedly speeding mowed down a 26-year-old teacher and injured her sister after ramming into their scooter at the traffic signal near Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) gate number 2 on the Ferozepur Road on Saturday morning.

A truck that was reportedly speeding mowed down a 26-year-old teacher and injured her sister after ramming into their scooter at the traffic signal near Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) gate number 2 on the Ferozepur Road on Saturday morning.

Karamjeet Kaur and her sister, Kuljeet Kaur, 23, residents of Indira Colony of Barewal Road, were going to a computer centre in Feroze Gandhi market, where both of them were teachers. While Kuljeet was driving the scooter, Karamjeet was riding pillion.

Around 7am, both of them stopped at the traffic signal outside PAU gate number 2. Meanwhile, a truck rammed into the siblings' scooter, dragging Karamjeet for around 20 metres, killing her on the spot. Kuljeet, who fell aside, suffered injuries.

Passers-by rushed Kuljeet to the hospital, where she was discharged after being given first aid.

Assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Sohan Lal at PAU police station, said they reached the spot and arrested the truck driver, who had been identified as Naresh Kumar. He was going towards Jalandhar from Moga side.

Father was passing by the mishap spot
Surjit Singh, father of the victims, was passing by the signal when the mishap occurred. A school van driver, Surjit, said he was on his way to pickup children for school. As he reached near PAU gate number 2, he noticed a mishap had occurred, and on going closer, he was shocked to see that it was his daughters who were victims of the mishap, following which he fainted on the spot.

Cops saved lives by jumping aside
According to eye-witnesses, the truck driver was driving rashly, and had hit a pole before ramming into the scooter. Even the cops deputed at the signal had to jump aside to save their lives, as the truck hit the pole.
