Frequent action by the tehbazari wing of Zone D of municipal corporation (MC) has left encroachers in different localities of the city jittery.
Encroachers now start winding up their goods as soon as they see a tehbazari team coming towards them.
During the past one month, there have been nearly 35 anti-encroachment drives in different areas within Zone D of the civic body.
During the days preceding Diwali, tehbazari wing was apparently showing leniency towards the encroachments because of residents visiting different markets in hordes. But soon after Diwali, the wing came into action and started acting against roadside carts and other encroachments.
Most of the areas, including Model Town, Feroze Gandhi Market, Ghumar Mandi and Sarabha Nagar, where encroachers rule the roost have been visited by tehbazari teams of zone D headed by superintendent Jasdev Sekhon, and encroachments have been removed.
The team also visited illegal vegetable market on Dugri Road and destroyed the encroachments. Sekhon said those violating the norms and encroaching upon the government land would not be spared.
“The menace of encroachments is grave in Ludhiana, and dealing with an iron hand is the only solution to give respite to commuters. Therefore, we have started taking action against encroachments,” Sekhon said.
However, there are still some areas where tehbazari wing has not taken any action so far. One such place is the furniture market from Bharat Nagar Chowk to bus stand. Shop owners in the market have encroached upon busy roads, leading to inconvenience to commuters.
When asked about this area, Sekhon said, “I would soon ask my team to visit the area and take action against the encroachers at the furniture market.”
