The initiative on the lines of metro cities like Delhi and Bangalore would empower the police to dispatch notices to violators on their home address for the offences committed on road.

Rohtak superintendent of police Shashank Anand told HT that the postal challan system would first be introduced in urban areas that are under CCTV camera vigil to capture wrong parking on road sides, which causes inconvenience to commuters and other road users.

"There is a provision under the Motor Vehicle Act under which the police can issue notice to violators and in our case, we would allow them to cross check their traffic violation through videographed clip at the challaning branch before one pays the fine," he said.

The police have acquired database of vehicle registration numbers from the state roadways department and local sub-divisional magistrate's office to send notices to vehicle owners' addresses, said the police.

Besides, CCTV cameras, handycam-wielding cops would also capture the footage of parking violations in busy areas of the town, he said. "The latest system ensures no interaction between the traffic violator and police, which will also reduce the probability of corruption," Anand said.

Notably, in a bid to become tech-savvy, the Rohtak police have replaced the traditional hand delivery system of reporting heinous crimes to senior police official and judicial officer with electronic mail to cut the time lag.
