Wails of women rented the air of this sleepy village on Saturday morning when they woke up to find eight of a family, including two children, buried under debris of the roof of a house that collapsed due to incessant rain in the region since Wednesday evening.
The deceased were identified as Mangal Masih (55), his wife Thoshi (50), sons Vikramjeet Masih (25) and Thomas (21), daughter Monika (19), grandson Anshdeep (2), granddaughter Aanchal (4), and granddaughter (daughter's daughter) Anju (12), while Mangal's daughter-in-law Sarabjeet(23) sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the Batala civil hospital.
Eight people were killed on Friday after couple of roofs collapsed due to rains in Amritsar district.
According to information, head of the family Mangal and his two sons were working as labourer and the entire family was sleeping in a single room when the incident occurred.
The incident came to light when Thomas' friend Kuddu Masih went to his house and called him around 5.30am, but his calls remained unanswered.
Kuddu called their another friend Tota and broke open the front gate to find the kuttcha roof of the room caved in, where all the nine family members were sleeping.
Later, the two called their neighbourer and drag out the buried persons from the debris and luckily, they were able to drag out Sarabjeet, who was alive while the rest was found dead.
Interestingly, the residents informed the administration around 6 AM but it took more than two hours for the police team to reach the spot while the officials of civil administration led by Deputy Commissioner, Gurdaspur, Abhinav Trikha and SDM, Batala, JSGrewal reached the spot by 11.30 AM.

Meanwhile, DC announced an ex-gratia grant of Rs 1 lakh to the kin of each of the deceased. Former Qadian MLA and Batala Halqa incharge Lalkbir Singh Lodhinangal too reached the spot. He also visited the civil hospital to inquire about Sarabjit's condition.
