In an attempt to provide better basic facilities in higher educational institutions, the state government has released a grant of Rs 9.5 crore for the face-lifting of seven government colleges in this district.
Deputy commissioner GK Singh, chairing a college principals' meet, said the Punjab Mandi Board had been assigned the task of completing necessary renovation work before December, following which adequate facilities would be provided in the colleges.
Singh said that besides renovation of the hostels, classroom toilets, canteens and college buildings, the colleges would be provided with adequate facilities of safe drinking water and proper water supply.
"The mandi board officials have been directed to float tenders immediately so that construction work could be started at the earliest," he said.
He said the Government College for Girls, Patiala, got the lion's share of grant, amounting to Rs 2.24 crore, while the other colleges also received funds.
Government College of Physical Education, Patiala; Government College, Nayal Patran; State College for Education, Patran; Government Mohindra College; Bikram College of Commerce; and Ripudaman College, Nabha; were among the colleges that received funds.
During the meeting, principals were also directed to take strict action against anybody found guilty of defacing college property.
