Beaten in the elections, Congressmen continue to be beaten up now. A day after Punjab Congress president Capt Amarinder Singh alleged persecution of his workers, some Akali workers in Moga district are accused of injuring a Congressman near Singhan Wala village on Monday.
A case has been registered against six unidentified persons, besides senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Jaspinder Singh and his father Raj Singh, said investigating officer ASI Gurdeep Singh of city south police.
The suspects are from Jeeta Singh Wala village in the district and charged under Sections 506 (criminal intimidation), 323 (causing hurt voluntarily), 148 (armed rioting), and 149 (unlawful assembly with common intent) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Sections 27, 54, and 59 of the Arms Act.
Nirmal Singh, who worked in the elections for the Congress, was on his way home after depositing some cash in the Life Insurance Corporation of India branch at Moga. His friend, Resham Singh, was driving him home on a motorcycle. A car rammed the two-vehicle and knocked them off it.
Resham Singh escaped but the six men in the car, who had their faces covered, hit Nirmal Singh with iron rods. The victim lodged a complaint with the police. "His legs are broken, and he has serious injuries on other parts of the body," said ASI Gurdeep Singh. "He has named Jaspinder Singh, an Akali leader from his village, one of the attackers. He said a cloth over Jaspinder's face had come off during the assault."
