Sangrur Police bust inter-state gang of ATM robbers, recover Rs 23 lakh

The Sangrur Police have busted an inter-state gang of ATM robbers and arrested two people. The accused have been identified as Rakesh Kumar alias Kakku and Sonu Singh of Banarsi village of Khanauri sub-division of the district.

The Sangrur Police have busted an inter-state gang of ATM robbers and arrested two people. The accused have been identified as Rakesh Kumar alias Kakku and Sonu Singh of Banarsi village of Khanauri sub-division of the district.

Police have also recovered Rs 23 lakh cash, seven pistols, a gypsy car, three motorcycles, a broken ATM, an Iphone 6, two wrist watches and some tools used for breaking ATMs, from their possession.

Paramjit Singh Gill, Patiala range inspector general, said the accused had robbed several ATMs in Punjab and Haryana. They were planning to expand their gang as they had recently purchased weapons with the robbed money. The IG said the robbers had an electrical shop in Jind district of Haryana from where they targeted the ATMs.

Sangrur SSP Mandeep Singh Sidhu said during the interrogation, the accused admitted that they had robbed several ATMs in Punjab and Haryana, including the ATMs of State Bank of India (SBI), Kalayat; State Bank of Patiala (SBP), Narwana; Punjab National Bank (PNB), Uchana Kalan, Jind; Central Bank of India, Narwana; PNB, Samana; PNB, Ujana Thana Garhi, Haryana; Oriental Bank of Commerce, Jind and SBI, Jind, and had also stolen a motorcycle of a police officer from outside the Uchana Police Station in Haryana.

The accused told the police that on January 10 last year, they robbed the first ATM in Haryana. The Khanauri Police have booked them under Section 25 of the Arms Act and have also started investigation to trace their links with other robberies in the two states.
