The management of the MGN Public School decided to close the school for three days, beginning May 21, to pre-empt a strike by non-teaching employees and to avoid any inconvenience to students and staff.
Ten employees at the school hostel had recently been terminated from their regular employment and re-employed on contract. This had led to resentment and there were reports that the non-teaching and menial staff had planned to sit on a dharna opposite the school gate on Tuesday and disrupt the school's functioning.
"The school management cited losses behind the move to ask employees to migrate to a contract system. As a result, employees are feeling insecure and victimised," said Non-Teaching Staff Union vice-president Harjinder Singh.
"Instead of improving it style of functioning, the management has chosen to target employees. This is unacceptable," he added.
He claimed that the teaching staff was also annoyed with the management over non-implementation of recommendations of Sixth Pay-Commission.
When contacted, principal Kamlesh Kaur Multani said, "The genuine demands of the employees are under consideration of the management. We provided two opportunities for the employees to talk to us, but they did not respond. Suddenly, they announced a stir. This is illogical."
