Schoolteacher gets 6 yrs' RI for sexual assault

A local court presided over by special judge Rajeev Bhardwaj convicted a schoolteacher to six years' rigorous imprisonment for sexual assault under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POSCO) Act , 2012.

A local court presided over by special judge Rajeev Bhardwaj convicted a schoolteacher to six years' rigorous imprisonment for sexual assault under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POSCO) Act , 2012.

The accused, Dharam Pal, who was employed as a teacher at the Government Primary School Samtehan of Tarsooh area of Bilaspur will have to undergo one-year imprisonment under section 354 of the IPC, six months' imprisonment under section 506 (i) of the IPC and shall have to pay Rs 1,000 under each section.

He will also have to serve six years in jail and pay a fine of Rs 50,000 under POCSO Act and, in case of default of payment, shall undergo simple imprisonment of one year. All sentences will run concurrently.

District attorney Ravinder Kumar Barwal said the parents of the victim's daughters aged between eight to eleven years reported an attempt of sexual assault with their wards before the police on May 19, 2013.
