To seek amendment in the Hindu Marriage Act, khap panchayats have decided to form a national executive committee at a meeting to be held in the second week of December in New Delhi.

To seek amendment in the Hindu Marriage Act, khap panchayats have decided to form a national executive committee at a meeting to be held in the second week of December in New Delhi.


Members of khap panchayats from five states - Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Punjab - are scheduled to participate in the meeting.

Sunil Jaglan, sarpanch of Bibipur village of Jind district, said: “Representatives of all castes other than Jat community will participate in the meeting and they will be entrusted with the responsibility of contributing to social campaigns.”

On the need to form national executive committee, Jaglan said that khaps had taken up several social issues in the past also, but they could not maintain momentum and continuity in carrying out the tasks.
Tek Ram Kandela, pardan of Kandela khap, said that the objective behind setting up of national executive committee is to take up the issue of seeking amendment in Hindu Marriage Act on priority basis.

He said that boys and girls of same village and same gotra got deviated from the societal culture and eloped from their homes in the protection of law which is setting up wrong precedents before others.
He said that the national level committee would meet the Prime Minister and the President with their demands of bringing amendment in the Hindu Marriage Act in syn with north India culture.
