Director general school education (DGSE) Kahan Singh Pannu said their services had been terminated keeping in view that their unauthorised absence had resulted in loss of studies to students and affected the teaching-learning atmosphere in the schools where they were posted.

The teachers were absent from schools since 2003. Last month, 39 government schoolteachers were dismissed by the DGSE for their unauthorised absence from schools.

Talking to Hindustan Times, Pannu said, "These teachers were given a month's time to reply as to why action should not be taken against them for having abandoned their duties. None of them replied following which it was presumed that they had nothing to say, so their services were terminated."

The DGSE said, "According to the Supreme Court, in such cases, long unauthorised absence may reasonably give rise to the inference that such service is intended to be abandoned by the employee. Being a case of abandonment of service, no notice or inquiry is required."

Barjinder Singh, in-charge, Government Primary School, Dullay, said, "It is a good move as now these posts will be filled and the youth will get employed."
