“How will the drive be conducted to help drug addicts in the state,” SGPC chief Avtar Singh Makkar told Hindustan Times.

Clearly claiming that he had been trying to start various drug de-addiction centres in various parts in the state, but he had not been getting positive response from doctors and psychiatrists, leading to a roadblock in the SGPC campaign.

However, he said the SGPC had only one drug-de-addiction centre at Guru Ramdass Medical College, Amritsar, where most of the beds remained occupied.

Stating that a hospital is not enough if one wants to rehabilitate the drug addicts in the state, Makkar observed the need of the hour clearly indicated that there was a dire need to start various drug de-addiction centres in the state.

Expressing his helplessness, he claimed that they would again try to give momentum to the social cause.
The SGPC had started a campaign to identify drug addicts in the state. It had also decided to provide them free medical treatment at their de-addiction centres.

He also asked various committees to hold a survey to identify drug addicts in villages and towns. He had claimed that the identified youth would be admitted at the SGPC-run de-addiction centres, where they would be provided free treatment.
