Shopkeepers alleged that the building owner, who was principal of a city college, was forcibly trying to evict them from the building by installing the gate.

The 700 square yards building at the prime location of the city was rented out to eight shopkeepers some years ago. The building has remained controversial as politicians have in the past tried to settle the issue between the tenants and owner of the building.

On Wednesday, the owner installed a gate at the entrance of the building, enraging the shopkeepers, who protested against the building owner's move.

Police reached the spot and tried to pacify the agitated shopkeepers, who first alleged that police was supporting the building owner, but later ended the protest.

According to the protesters, some miscreants had broken the locks of their shops some days ago; but, they had nabbed the miscreants and handed them over to the police.

Ghumar Mandi police post incharge sub-inspector Pawan Kumar said the situation was under control.
