A medical team from local Amardeep Hospital on Tuesday flew to Uzbekistan to perform more than 100 free surgeries on patients with cleft lips and palates at the regional hospital at Urgench in Uzbekistan.
The hospital has been shortlisted by the US-based NGO 'Smile Train', a charitable organisation working with those with cleft lips and palates and offers them free surgeries.
Satish Kalra, chief programme officer of 'Smile Train', noted that the aim was to give those with cleft lips and palates a chance at dignified living.
The team would conduct the surgeries within 10 days and post- operative care and follow-up treatment would be started and followed through thereafter by the Uzbekistan hospital staff.
The 9-member team includes Dr Harish Ghildiyal, Dr Raman Sethi, Dr Rahul Chhajlani, Dr Subharvar Ashish and Dr Pankaj Soni. The assisting staff includes Sukhdev Singh, Rajwinder Kaur, Ramanjit Singh and Baljit Singh.
Such surgical missions have been conducted earlier in Myanmar, Burundi, Rwanda and other African countries.
