In a rush to meet the deadline to cover the entire Jalandhar cluster under the solid waste management project before June 15, the private firm, Jindal Urban Waste Management Jalandhar Limited (JUWMJL), has not even brought equipment and bins to collect the garbage as per the agreement, resulting in a nuisance to local residents.
Twenty days after it was implemented in Kapurthala city, the project seems to be just eyewash after the National Green Tribunal (NGT) had told the company to speedily implement it in the Jalandhar cluster.
Earlier, the firm claimed that the dump the Kapurthala municipal council (MC) had provided does not have a proper approach road and large compactors could not be driven due to unpaved roads. But now, the authorities provided one acre land to the company on June 1.
“Even as we have provided the land to the company for dumping garbage, they still have not brought proper equipment,” Jugraj Singh, MC sanitary inspector, said. Jugraj said he has lodged a complaint with the project manager in Jalandhar about the company’s failure to implement the project in the town.

{{/usCountry}}Satish Kumar Sharma, project head, JUWMJL, said the MC authorities had recently provided them a dumping site and now they have started bringing all the equipment.
“I have sent 30 employees, four large bins, one compactor, 20 rickshaws to kick start the work within a week. We will bring all the equipment to properly implement the project,” he said.
He said the company will also start a door-to-door project in the town which was being opposed by safai sewaks. The MC has leased out one acre land at Kanjli village on a yearly rent of Rs 50,000.
