City residents will now be able to send their articles via speed post even after 8pm everyday as the Indian Post is making it a 24-hour service from Saturday.
Officials at the head post office here informed HT on Tuesday that they have already received the instructions in this regard and were working to implement them soon.
Aarti Kumari, manager, National Sorting Hub (NSH), said that the service will be made 24/7 this week.
“At present, most of the staff on the night shifts are only for the sorting articles and getting them ready for dispatch, but now we have to assign work to other staff members as well,” she added.
Earlier, though the sorting of the speed post articles was being carried out even at night, the booking hours were only from 9 am to 8 pm from Monday to Saturday and from 9 am to 3:30 pm on Sunday.
Officials claimed that the Jalandhar division offices will be first in the state to start the service for 24 hours.
The 24/7 service will be available in all the 96 sub-offices of the division that also cover the Nawanshahr area.
As per the record of the head post office, the speed post receives 300 to 400 articles on a daily basis.
