The students of Doraha Group of Institutes entertained the inmates of senior citizens' home, 'Heavenly Palace', by performing at a specially organised 'Baisakhi' function on Monday.
Heavenly Palace is also a non-governmental organization (NGO) working for senior citizens. The event was attended by senior citizens from across Punjab, including Amritsar, Ropar and Jalandhar, apart from those who came visiting from New Delhi.
The purpose of the function was to instill a sense of security and belongingness among senior citizens, and to uphold their dignity and respect. Renowned agricultural economist and philanthropist Dr SS Johl welcomed the guests and participants on the occasion.
The senior citizens' home turned into a fair, with colourful festivities -dance, music, magic show, puppet show - marking the occasion. Industrialists and professionals from various walks of life also attended the event. The students also presented bhangra, gidha, group dance, skit, poems on Baisakhi.
Dr HK Bal, an inmate, said, “Old people would have never imagined that they will enjoy such an event at this stage of life; we don't feel disassociated from family and society anymore.”
Satish Kaul, a well-known actor and also an inmate of the home, said, “We had never thought that we would be entertained in such a big way.” Chairman of the group, Sukhpal Singh, was also present on the occasion. He said that youngsters should always be eager to learn from the elderly.”
