Members of the Punjab Students Union held protests in several government colleges and industrial training institutes (ITIs) in the district and did not allow students to enter campuses of the colleges.

They were protesting against the proposal to sell the ground of the Barnala ITI for the construction of a private suvidha centre, hike in fee, registration of a case against some students at the Cheema police station and non-implementation of the bus pass facility for all buses.

Union leader Shankar Badra said the state government was not taking genuine demands of the students seriously and fees were being increased every year and no action was being taken against the educational institutions that charged fee even from students of backward classes.
