The great grandson of celebrated Urdu sufi poet Maulvi Ghulam Rasool Alampuri, who had come from Pakistan to pay obeisance at the latter's dargah in Alampur village in Dasuya subdivision on Thursday, had to face embarrassment as he was not allowed passage by a school owner who has taken the adjoining land on lease from the Waqf Board. Official intervention also could not move the school owner.
Maulvi Ghulam Rasool was born in Alampur in 1849 and on his death in 1892, was buried in a graveyard in the same village. He has a great fan following, both in India and Pakistan. He has several books to his credit. A PhD thesis on his works was published by the language department, Patiala, while two theses were written on his life and poetry in Pakistan.
Maulvi's great grandson Shehzada Masood Ahmed had come to Alampur for the tenth time but was utterly disappointed when the school owner barred his entry in the dargah. He was accompanied by members of the Maulvi Ghulam Rasool Alampuri Trust which is constructing a shrine in his memory. Masood Ahmed approached Dasuya sub divisional magistrate Barjinder Singh for assistance who sent a tehsildar and a police officer to the site, but the school owner refused to oblige.
Masood Ahmed revealed that due to the school owner's refusal to allow passage, construction work at the shrine had come to a standstill. He said despite his repeated pleas, the Punjab Waqf Board had not shown any seriousness in resolving the dispute, adding it was sheer insult to the revered poet. School owner Kamal Ghotra said he was making regular payment to the Waqf Board and reserved the right of passage through the land. Waqf Board chairman Izhar Alam said he was aware of the matter and would do the needful soon.
