Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal will lead a 15 to 20-member business delegation to Pakistan on November 5 for boosting trade ties between the two nations and for exploring trading possibilities between the Punjabs on either side of the border.
Suneet Kochhar, director of Khanna Paper Mills Ltd here, will be part of this delegation. The company has supplied more than 500 tonnes of newsprint to Pakistani dailies in the last couple of months.
"We are hoping to further explore the market in Pakistan and this visit will provide us this opportunity," Kochhar said. "We can, as of now, export 4,000 tonnes of newsprint to Pakistan per month."
The delegation will also have public relations and revenue minister Bikram Singh Majithia. The delegation will return on November 9.
In a press release issued here on Friday, Kochhar said that with India and Pakistan agreeing to trade around 6,000 entities through the Attari-Wagah border, Sukhbir had chosen the right time to head a delegation comprising prominent businessmen from Punjab. "This visit will enhance trade ties by making efforts to remove various items from the negative list and streamline trade across the Wagah border," he added.
Kochhar said the Punjab government had been playing a pivotal role in promoting the need to increase trade between the two nations, especially between the Punjabi people on both sides. "The Amritsar-Lahore corridor via the Wagah-Attari border is beneficial for the economies and businesses due to its low freight cost and less time for supply," he added.
