The Tarn Taran police claimed to have arrested a retired police constable, his son with 295gm heroin from Gazal village, falling in Bhikhiwind sub division, on Friday.
The accused have been identified as constable Lakhbir Singh,45, and his son Karanbir Singh,23, of Harike, in Patti sub-division of the border district. The police have also recovered a .32 bore revolver, five live rounds, Rs 12,000 and a Scorpio SUV from their possession.
Deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Bhikhiwind, Sulakhan Singh Mann, said, “Assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Manjinder Singh of Khemkaran police post had laid a naka at Gazal village, 3 km from the Indo-Pak border, to keep a check on criminal activates in the area.” “During a routine checking, a Scorpio SUV (PB-08-CC-0081) was stopped by the police,” the DSP said.
“While searching the vehicle, the team recovered 295gm heroin, a .32 bore revolver, five live rounds and Indian currency,” said the DSP. He said, “The team arrested the accused immediately after recovering heroin from the car.” The DSP further said, “While investigating, the accused constable Lakhbir Singh confessed that he had taken voluntarily retirement after he came in contact with few heroin smugglers.”
“The accused said that when he came to know about the huge income in drug smuggling, he started working for smugglers and involved his son for the same,” said Mann. He said that the accused has also admitted to earning extensive wealth from the heroin smuggling business. He said the accused also revealed to the police that he purchased three big houses at Amritsar, Faridkot and Harike (Tarn Taran) from the money earned through smuggling. A case under Sections 21-61-85 of the The Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances(NDPS) Act and 25-27-54-59 of Arms Act has been registered against the duo said Mann.
