Teen sexual assault: Sangrur village teacher arrested

A day after 50-year-old Gurjant Singh, a government school teacher from village Namole in Sunam sub-division, was booked for the alleged rape of a minor Dalit girl, the police arrested him. He was caught from Cheema Mandi area near Sunam, 15 km from here, on Thursday morning, said the police. He would be produced before a magistrate on Friday.

A day after 50-year-old Gurjant Singh, a government school teacher from village Namole in Sunam sub-division, was booked for the alleged rape of a minor Dalit girl, the police arrested him. He was caught from Cheema Mandi area near Sunam, 15 km from here, on Thursday morning, said the police. He would be produced before a magistrate on Friday.

A mathematics teacher, Gurjant is alleged to have raped a 14-year-old girl of Class 8 from Government Senior Secondary School in village Namole, where he teaches. He lives in the same village. Also, besides section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the police have now added to the FIR charges under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989 and the Protection of Children From Sexual Offences Act 2012.

Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Harcharan Singh Bhullar produced Gurjant before the media and said, "He has admitted that he called the girl to his house on the pretext of evaluating her mathematics notebook on December 31 and had sexual intercourse with her."
