The video of the incident that took place on August 28 had gone viral in four separate clips on various social networking sites and apps.

The accused have been identified as Happy of Jawahar Nagar, Vicky and Raj Kumar, alias Raja, both from Gandhi colony in Amritsar.

The victim, Chainchal Singh of Kale Ghanupur locality, was paraded in a semi-naked state on streets after being stripped down and thrashed by the accused at an abandoned plot in Sandhu Colony, police said.

It was only after the Sadar police examined the clips that they asked the victim to lodge a formal complaint.

Additional deputy commissioner of police (ADCP) (City-2) Lakhbir Singh said, “Chainchal had earlier got engaged to a girl of Sandhu Colony. However, their engagement was called off, but despite that, the duo was in contact with each other. On August 28, Chainchal had gone to meet his ex-fiancée at her home, where he was caught by her relatives, who thrashed him.”

He said a team under the supervision of Sadar station house officer (SHO) Rajwinder Kaur was conducting raids to arrest the accused and on Wednesday, the team caught the trio from Jawahar Nagar following a tip-off.

The police have also booked nine unidentified men in this connection under Sections 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means), 379B (snatching) and 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Section 67 (punishment for publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form) of the Information Technology (IT) Act.

The trio will be produced in a local court from where their police remand will be taken. “During the remand, we will identify the other accused, who accompanied the trio while committing the crime,” the ACP said.
