The district police have arrested a private gunman, Gaffur Ali, of Jalandhar Youth Congress President Kaku Ahluwalia for allegedly opening fire near the local bus stand and injuring three. Rajesh Kumar Bhaskar alias, Lalli Bhaskar, vice-president of the state unit of Anti-Terrorist Front, was among the injured.

Kapurthala SSP Inderbir Singh said that Gaffur, a resident of Sheikhupur, opened fire after a heated scuffle with these persons over a petty issue. "He (Gaffur) and some others were drinking at the time. Inebriated, the two groups fired at each other from their revolvers."

In the incident, Bhaskar, Balwinder Singh alias Pinka, a Kapurthala resident and Bhajan Singh, a Bhawanipur village resident were injured and were taken to the civil hospital. Bhaskar was taken to a Jalandhar-based private hospital for treatment, while the other two were shifted to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital, Ludhiana.

It is known that one of the injured, Bhajan Singh, and the accused Gaffur Ali had known each other for over 10 years. They had reportedly served as security guards to one Sourav Bhandari, the SSp claimed.

The police had arrested Gaffur Ali under Section 307 (attempt to murder) and 34 (causing grievous hurt) of the IPC and different Sections of Arms Act, 1959.
