Struggling for the identification of the deceased, the Simlapuri police had sent the body to the civil hospital and registered a case of causing death due to negligence against an unidentified truck driver. Some eyewitnesses confirmed that he was walking on the road when the incident took place.

The family identified the body on Saturday. A resident of Dashmesh Nagar near Gill Chowk, Amarjit Singh Matharu remained a councillor in 2002. He owned an auto-part factory.

Senior Congress leader Amarjit Singh Tikka said Matharu had gone to Jifco resort, Sahnewal, to attend a marriage function on Thursday and did not return. The family members were searching for him unaware about his death in a road mishap.

The family members contacted the police on Saturday about Matharu's disappearance. The police then informed them about a body recovered from the area which matched the details provided by the kin.

Tikka said Matharu had served the party on different portfolios. He served the Youth Congress as general secretary of state and later he joined as the secretary in Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee.
