Amritsar city police on Monday arrested two persons in connection with a three-month-old robbery case in which a UK-based NRI family was robbed by unidentified persons aboard an I-20 car on gunpoint near Verka, while they were heading towards Jalandhar from Sri Guru Ram Dass Ji International Airport.
The two arrested accused have been identified as Hargurinder Singh and Jasbir Singh, both residents of Tarn Taran. The police have recovered I-20 car, a country-made pistol, a phone, a tablet, three suitcases, two 12 bore double barrel rifles and eight live cartridges from the accused.
Harvinder Singh, additional deputy commissioner of police, City-I, said a case in this regard was registered at A Division police station on the complaint of Sarabjit Singh, a resident of Jalandhar and a relative of the NRI family from UK, under Sections 392 (punishment for robbery), 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Sections 25, 27, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act.
In the complaint lodged with the police, Sarabjit Singh had alleged that on August 29, his brother-in-law Simarjit Singh Virdi was on his way to Jalandhar from Sri Guru Ram Dass Ji International Airport. At around 3:30 AM, the accused, who were armed and were following them in an i-20 car, waylaid them when they reached the railway over-bridge near Verka and looted them on gunpoint.

{{/usCountry}}“The accused are addicted to drugs and looted the NRI family to support their drug cravings,” he said. “The I-20 car used in the incident belonged to Hargurinder Singh,” he added. He maintained that the arrested accused would be presented in court and taken on remand for further questioning. “More recoveries are likely to be made from them in the days to come. Further investigation is being held into the matter,” he said.
