The district police on Saturday arrested two youths for allegedly tearing off two pages of a ‘Bir’ of Guru Granth Sahib in a gurdwara at Latkan village in Abohar, a sub-division of Fazilka district.

The arrested have been identified as Vijay Kumar, a local youth, who was also a guard in the gurdwara and Sonu, 29, another youth of the village.

Mukhtiar Singh, granthi at the gurdwara, had found two pages 633 and 636 of the ‘Bir’ missing late October 26 evening. The incident had spread a wave of anguish among the local residents and they had given an ‘ultimatum’ to the local civil and police administration to trace the accused by October 30, failing which they threatened to launch an agitation.

After the incident, the local administration got installed ‘hidden CCTV cameras’ in the gurdwara and the police commenced a search operation in the houses of the village to trace the missing pages.

The police nabbed him on the basis of the video footage, said the SSP.
