Two persons were killed and two others were seriously injured when the car they were travelling in collided with a stationary truck from behind near Rurki village on the Sirhind-Patiala highway here on Thursday morning.
The deceased have been identified as Jagjit Singh, 55, and Amarjit Singh, 50. The seriously injured Paramjit Kaur, 50, and Mandeep Singh, 28, were rushed to the civil hospital here where the doctors referred them to the PGI, Chandigarh, where their condition was stated to be critical.
Kuljeet Singh, in-charge of Mullepur police station, said the incident occurred at 7 am. He said a car (PB 10 DW 9009) coming from the Patiala side was on its way to Katala village in Ludhiana district.
He said as soon as it reached Rurki village, it suddenly hit the wrongly parked stationary truck (PB 10 EH 7016) on the roadside. He said the impact of the accident was such that the two people, sitting on the front seats died on the spot.
He said the truck driver, who tried to flee from the site, has been arrested and a case registered against him.
After receiving information, Balvir Singh, a resident of Patiala and a family member of Amarjit Singh, also reached the site of eh accident. He said the victims were returning to their home after visiting a hospital in Ajmer for check-up of Mandeep Singh.
