The 'Panghoora' scheme has received 79 children so far, of which 74 are girls.

Tarundeep Kaur, the chairperson of Red Cross Hospital (welfare section), said, "The required medical checkups have been conducted on both the girls and they were found fit."

"There seems no end to the practice of abandoning the girl child. We recently received two more infants, aged between one and two years, in the cradle," Kaur said.

"Our social fabric is disintegrating day by day. If we look at the Vedas, there was a higher place for women in comparison with modern society," Kaur said.

"As the Women' Day is round the corner, all of us need to take a pledge to value our daughters, give them equal rights and educate them to boost their confidence and financial security. Education is the key."
