Reacting to actor Aamir Khan’s remarks on rising intolerance in the country, Union minister of state for planning and defence Rao Inderjit Singh said that any responsible writer, artist or actor should always exercise extra caution in choosing words while voicing his or her opinion.
“What purpose does it serve by giving undue importance to the superficial tolerant-intolerant debate? We should absolutely ignore ridiculous opinions of few people who are just indulging in a futile narrative of emergency-like situation,” the minister, who is BJP MP from Gurgaon in Haryana, said in a series of tweets on microblogging site Twitter on Tuesday afternoon. A Congressman for 36 years, Rao Inderjit joined the BJP just weeks before the 2014 parliamentary polls.
The minister’s remarks came a day after Aamir Khan had joined the ongoing debate over acts of intolerance, saying that a sense of “insecurity” and “fear” had seeped deep within the society, even in his family, due to the rise in number of such cases in the last six to eight months.
Rao Inderjit futher said that there was no need to get carried away by some pretentious sound-bites by an actor or writer, playing on news channels. “In which other country so many cultures, religions and languages have been thriving together so seamlessly and that too for 100s of years,” he wrote.
