Varsity students calls off stir

Students at Punjabi University called off their protest on Thursday after having a meeting with the university authorities on Thursday. The research scholar, Sarvir Kaur, who was sitting on a hunger strike, was offered juice by the dean, Students Welfare, Kulbir Singh Dhillon after the meeting.

The research scholar, Sarvir Kaur, who was sitting on a hunger strike, was offered juice by the dean, Students Welfare, Kulbir Singh Dhillon after the meeting. She was sitting on the hunger strike after warden of the hostel directed her to vacate the room following allegations against her of staying illegally in the hostel.

Earlier in the mor ning, students under the banner of the Democratic Students Organisation continued with their protest and blocked the main gate of the vice-chancellor’s office.

Later on, Dhillon along with the dean, academic, Jaswinder Singh, approached students and agreed to have meeting with representatives of student unions.

The authorities have agreed to allow student to stay in the hostel for 20 days and would reconsider about her stay after the stipulated time. They also clarified that strict action would be taken against hostel inhabitants if they violate any rule.

The authorities also assured that common rules for all hostels will be made and displayed in each hostel. Besides, a meeting of different students groups with senior officials of the university will be held to ensure a cordial atmosphere in the hostels.

It was also decided at the meeting that a common front of students and officials will be constituted to solve different problems pertaining to students.

The authorities also condemned agitators’ action of locking VC’s office main gate.

The dean, student’s welfare, Kulbir Singh Dhillon, said students and officials had reached a consensus on above issues.
