Residents of Sultanpuriya village here have threatened to boycott the upcoming Lok Sabha elections if the water of the Ghaggar river did not reach the village.
Despite located along the Ghaggar river, the villagers face difficulty in irrigating their fields. The villagers staged a dharna at the village bus stand on Thursday.
Kaluram Khichar, village sarpanch, said, "In the rainy season we have to face floods and for the rest of the year we are short of water."
He said that their demand for a new link branch from Ghaggar river was pending for the last 10 years. "We had taken this issue with leaders of almost all political parties, but nothing happened. Now, we have decided that if our demand of new link branch is not met, we will boycott the forthcoming elections," he added.
Bansi Lal, a panch, said, "Surveys for the link branch had been done several times by the officials. Residents of Sultanpuriya, Bangi Dhani, Abholi, Nanuana, and Rania villages will benefit if the link branch in place."
Another villager Hari Krishan Lal said that the undeground water level was receding fast and all their demands to supply them water from Ghaggar had fallen on deaf ears. "There are 2,000 voters in the village and we have not allowed any leader to campaign in the village," he said.
