A 28-year-old woman Sarvjit Kaur of Bhagdana village here was allegedly poisoned to death by her in-laws for not bringing more dowry, on Monday.

The father of the deceased, Amrik Singh of Baghria village, lodged a complaint at the Badali Ala Singh police station following which they booked five members - husband Gurpreet Singh, father-in-law Jaswant Singh, mother-in-law Gurvinder Kaur, brother-in-law Iqbal Singh and sister-in-law Rajvinder Kaur - on the charge of death due to dowry demand. The husband, Gurpreet, has been arrested.

The complainant said that his daughter's in-laws started demanding dowry a few months after the wedding in 2009, although he had already given them dowry at the time of the wedding. He alleged Gurpreet had demanded `2.5 lakh about two months ago. Amrik gave the sum by selling off a piece of land. On August 23, his daughter had informed him over phone that her in-laws were harassing her for more dowry and on August 25 his daughter's in-laws told him that Sarvjit was ill. But, when he reached their house, his daughter had died. He alleged that the in-laws had killed his daughter by mixing poison in her food.

Amrik also accused Gurpreet, who worked on fields, of being a drug addict and not allowing his daughter to go to work.
