The victim’s mother, Balwinder, has alleged that harassment due to dowry and her son-in-law’s previous concealed marriage were the reasons that led her daughter to commit suicide.

"My daughter was married to a US-based NRI and a resident of Bholath, Kamaljeet Singh, 15 months ago. Soon, we discovered that Kamaljeet Singh had previously married in America and was also the father of a 10-year-old son."

She claimed that soon harassment for dowry started. “We were being pressured to give them Rs 8 lakh for purchasing a car and my daughter was being treated like a bonded labourer. On Saturday morning, she had called me to say that she was not even being food to eat.”

"Later in the day, she was admitted to a private hospital by her in-laws after she consumed a poisonous substance. They later fled from the hospital, which shifted her to another Jalandhar-based trauma hospital. With treatment, Navneet regained her senses and gave the staff our number before dying. The staff called us at around 10:30 pm on Saturday.”

On Sunday afternoon, the body was taken to local civil hospital for post-mortem. Relatives of girl blocked the traffic opposite civil hospital demanding booking of sister-in-law, brother-in-law and the middle-man as the co-accused in the FIR.

“We are appending the names in already registered FIR,” said the SHO adding that no arrest had been made so far. The victim is survived by a six-month old.
