Simranjit Kaur complained to the police that her husband Jaswinder Singh and mother-in-law Manjit Kaur had forcibly put phenyl tablets in her mouth at their house at Badali Ala Singh.

The woman, who recorded her statement in presence of the judicial magistrate, also named her sister in-law Ramanvir Kaur.

SHO Badali Ala Singh, Sarabjit Singh, said the accused were booked on charges of attempt to murder. They were yet to be arrested.

Simranjit, pursuing her Master’s in education, said she married Jaswinder Singh in March last year. She alleged things turned sour just days after the wedding as her in-laws often demanded dowry from her parents. She said she lodged a complaint at the women’s commission a month ago after which the families reached a compromise.

But she said on Tuesday, her sister in-law stopped her from using kitchen. “They gave me four phenyl tablets and then my husband and sister in-law poured water in my mouth,” Simranjit alleged.
