To improve the number of natural deliveries and to reduce the stress level of women in labour, the district health department has decided to allow a woman kin of the patient to accompany the expectant mother in labour room across government medical institutions in the district.
The health department has issued a circular to all government hospitals and asked for implementation with immediate effect.
Inaugurating the programme from the Mata Kaushalaya Hospital, civil surgeon Rajiv Bhalla said, "It was seen that women often panicked and were ill-prepared for normal deliveries while in labour. We hope that with the presence of one of their family members in the labour room, their morale will remain high and they will feel secure. We hope to increase the proportion of normal deliveries by this method."
However, the civil surgeon added a caveat to the relaxation in rules. "Only those women, who have gone through labour pain, will be allowed to have a kin in the labour room. The idea is to facilitate the process by making the woman more comfortable and relaxed."
He claimed that with this step, the department would also be able to better regulate the behaviour of doctors and nurses."It is often found that hospital staff misbehaves with women in labour pain or those about to deliver, leading to an increase in the stress level of patients. Now, this will make them more cautious and sensitive to the patient," he claimed.
