Lodging their protest against the forcible collection of sewerage bills from local residents and reportedly ignoring the pending dues of the top government officials and politicians of the ruling party, the Youth Congress workers along with local unit president Ashu Thakur on Saturday uprooted the sewerage connection at the residence of Bathinda municipal corporation (MCB) commissioner Vipul Ujjwal.
The incident had come after a five-day hunger strike by senior Congress leader and Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee general secretary Harminder Singh Jassi from December 23 to December 27 against the imposition of the property tax by the state government and disconnection of sewerage connections of people for their failure to clear bills.
Raising anti-government slogans, the youth Congress workers walked towards the house of the MCB commissioner and uprooted the sewerage connection, while claiming that the MCB commissioner had failed to pay the bill of Rs 16,000.
"The sewerage connections of poor people are being disconnected whereas the state government has failed to collect the same from its own officers. We uprooted the sewerage connection at the MCB commissioner's house as he had failed to clear the dues of Rs 16,000 and now it's the turn to uproot connections of all those officials and ruling politicians who have failed to pay the sewerage bills," the protesters said.
The station house officer, Thermal police station, said, "No case has been registered and the protesters had not trespassed into the house of the MCB commissioner. The police reached in time and avoided them to continue with their protest."
