A youth from Balloke village was shot dead in Chuharpur area of Haibowal by a farmer-son duo hailing from Chuharpur due to old rivalry on late Friday night.
An injured Gurmeet Singh (27) was rushed to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital, where he succumbed to injuries after two hours. Gurmeet was youngest of the four brothers.
Police have since arrested Kuljeet Singh (50) and his son Kamaljit (22) in the case, registered on the basis of statement of Jatinder Singh, a brother of the victim.
According to Jatinder, Gurmeet was at his home when he answered a call from Kamaljit around 10pm on Friday to come to Chuharpur road area on the pretext that they needed his help in a road rage case.
Jatinder said he suspected something fishy and began to follow Gurmeet as he left his house. As he reached Chuharpur road, he allegedly saw Kamaljit and Kuljeet thrashing Gurmeet. Kuljeet reportedly fired a round from a .12 bore rifle, which hit Gurmeet in the chest.
Jatinder said he raised an alarm, after which one Ranjit Singh, president of Basant Vihar welfare society, reached the spot. Both took Gurmeet to the hospital.
Jatinder told police that Kamaljit had scuffled with their neighbour Guri a few months ago, in which Gurmeet had helped the latter. Later, a compromise was reached between the two parties but Kamaljit bore a grudge against Gurmeet even though he kept posing as friend.
