In a daring act, five youths assaulted a private bus driver with sharp-edged weapon and later opened fire when he took refuge in a police station. Even as the accused fled the police station after the firing, police allegedly remained a mute spectator.
Sources said that accused Jaideep Singh, Avtar Singh, Jagraj Singh, Gurbinder Singh and Monti had tried to overtake a private bus moving from Abohar to Amritsar but failed. They forced the bus to stop at Tarn Taran bypass where they had an altercation with bus driver Iqbal Singh. The accused allegedly threatened him with dire consequences.
On Tuesday, while Iqbal was driving the bus through Tarn Taran, the accused chased him and fired at the vehicle, shattering its windowpane. The driver drove the bus to the police station at Tarn Taran bus stand and lodged a complaint with the police.
Sources said that the armed accused then entered the police station and attacked Iqbal and also opened fire in the presence of cops. According to sources, the accused fled the spot as cops did not try to to nab them.
The injured bus driver was admitted to hospital where his condition was said to be stable.
This is the second incident of firing in a public place in the area. A few days ago, unidentified youths shot dead a granthi at a historical gurdwara.

Tarn Taran police station SHO Gurcharan Singh said that the accused chased the bus from Goindwal Sahib railway crossing and fired in the air. He said that a case has been registered against the accused under Section 307, 427, 506 of the IPC and the Arms Act. He maintained that the bus stand area was quite large and due to staff shortage it was not possible to watch each and every activity of people.
