A day after Trinamool Congress (TMC) state convener Dilip Chatterjee was arrested on Saturday for his role in the attack on the convoy of the then Bihar chief minister Lalu Prasad some 22 years ago, candidates in Dhanbad have come into alert mode.
Those who will sweat it out for the Dhanbad Lok Sabha seat are not taking any chances.
The candidates, some of whom are facing political and criminal charges, have started digging up old cases pending against them and also begun the process to hush them up before they proceed to file their nominations.
It may be noted that notification for Dhanbad LS seat would be announced on March 29 and the last date of filing nomination is April 5. Scrutiny would be held on April 7 and withdrawal on April 9.
So far, eight candidates have announced their candidature for Dhanbad Lok Sabha seat. Prominent among them are BJP’s PN Singh, who also happens to be the sitting MP, Ajay Dubey of the Congress, Samresh Singh of the Jharkhand Vikash Morcha (JVM), former MP and TMC leader Chandrashekhar Dubey, AJSU legislator Umakant Rajak, Anand Mahto of Marxist Coordination Committee (MCC), BSP’s Ramadhir Singh (also the brother-in-law of BJP’s Jharia MLA Kunti Singh) and Sushil Singh of Janata Dal United.
During the 2009 Lok Sabha elections, the then BSP candidate Samresh Singh was arrested just after he filed his nominations for the Dhanbad LS seat which is said to be one of the reasons for his defeat.

{{/usCountry}}“There is no doubt that some of the candidates are facing charges in different cases. If warrant is issued by the court in any case, then he or she is left with no option but to surrender in the court to avoid arrest,” said Narendra Trivedi, lawyer, Dhanbad Bar Association.
