Dhanbad is the dirtiest city in the country and Jharkhand’s smart city entry Ranchi figured in the bottom 12 Swachh Survekshan list released by the Union government on Monday.
The Union urban development ministry had conducted a survey of 73 cities to measure the impact of the Swachh Bharat Mission.
Jharkhand’s another city, Jamshedpur, stood at the 66th position with 827 of 2,000 points while capital Ranchi ranked 62nd with 874 among 73 cities. Dhanbad, with the worst solid waste management measures, could score only 464 .
Dhanbad mayor Sekhar Agarwal said, “Neither we have dustbins nor a waste treatment plant. Moreover, cleanliness fund and cleanliness workers are also limited. With the given resources, how could one expect a clean city?”
He blamed various coal companies and institutions, including Bharat Coking Coal Limited, Central Institute of Mining and Fuel Research, Indian School of Mines and others for not paying property tax with respect to colonies under their commands. “BCCL colonies dirty the city the most but pay nothing to Dhanbad Municipal Corporation to clean the litter up,” Agarwal said.

They are JUSCO, Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee, Mango Notified Area Committee and Jugsalai Municipality. The leading private utility company JUSCO has its own solid waste treatment plant and a good number of workers to keep their area clean. But the performance of the other three agencies is not on par with JUSCO in their respective areas, sources said.
