India’s cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni might be two wins away from the second consecutive World Cup victory but a gift in advance awaits him in his hometown, Ranchi. MECON limited, a public sector undertaking, under the ministry of steel, has decided to name its MECON stadium after the Indian skipper. From January 2016, the
stadium, where Dhoni grew up playing, will be called MECON-MSD stadium, PSU said on Wednesday.

The announcement was made by MECON chairman-cum-managing director AK Tyagi on the opening ceremony of the 9th National Cricket Tournament for Differently Abled at the stadium.

“MS Dhoni had started his career in cricket as well as education from Jawhar Vidya Mandir (JVM) and MECON stadium and there cannot be a better occasion to dedicate this stadium to our own Mahi,” Tyagi said.

He said, “We hope Mahi will come here to inaugurate this stadium with the world cup trophy.”

MS Dhoni’s first coach, KR Banerjee, who was happy about the announcement, said, “This was my dream that MECON stadium should be named after Mahi but never tell anyone. Thanks for MECON for this great thinking.”

He said, “I know this news will definitely enthuse Mahi because this is a place where Mahi started his cricket.”
